Last week, Annemarie wrote an article titled “Scamming the Elderly,” where she learned about new scams threatening the senior community. On October 20th, a telephone scam targeting senior citizens was reported to the state Division of Consumer Affairs. A Toms River resident received a phone call from a person claiming to be from the Social Security Administration calling about a new law that was passed and asked the senior citizen to identify their bank. Afterwards, the caller asked about a series of numbers and if any matched numbers from checks.
The Department of Consumer Affairs has posted advice to consumers on their website. The most important advice is to never provide personal information over the phone. The website also has information for anyone who is a victim of this scam.
