On Thursday, September 22, 2011 I had the pleasure of attending and participating in a seminar aimed at educating the public, particularly those in the golden years of their lives, about the prevalence of fraud and scamming. The seminar was held at the Whiting Healthcare Center. The speakers included myself, together with Cindy Boyd from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and Donna from Investor’s Bank in Whiting. Cindy with her wealth of knowledge handling these matters for the Prosecutor’s Office and Donna with her savvy from the banking end proved to be a powerful pair in helping those in attendance learn how to avoid falling prey to such unscrupulous individuals. I hope that my contributions to the seminar also helped those in attendance learn the value of appointing trusted individuals to serve as Powers of Attorney and to be vigilant in protecting their personal information. As was stressed at the seminar, the best way to avoid being scammed is to be educated and to stay educated because these scammers are always trying news ways to trick you.
