William R. Burns

Litigation | Crisis Management | Labor and Employment | Compliance | Contractual and Business Disputes | School Law | Public Sector and Government | Criminal Law / White Collar Defense

“Diligent preparation, clear communication, skilled advocacy, and dogged determination are key components in any successful litigation, dispute resolution and crisis response.”

William Burns, an accomplished trial attorney, joined the firm as Of Counsel in 2020. His practice focuses on all aspects of litigation, crisis management, labor and employment, and criminal law and white-collar defense. William has been described as someone who has astute situational awareness, he immediately “sees and understands the whole board.”  Seeing large things largely enables William to develop and implement strategies that focus on his clients’ overall goals.  While William is always ready to take a case to verdict, his client’s goals are always paramount, and he is willing and able to find creative solutions to his clients’ issues. Often, that means clients hire William not only for litigation-related matters, but also to provide strategic advice and counseling on complicated civil disputes, business issues and crisis management.

He has successfully represented private and public sector clients before a wide array of federal, state and local agencies, commissions and boards.  William has also effectively argued cases in Federal and State Courts throughout New Jersey and the region.

Before joining the firm, William served as an Assistant Prosecutor in Mercer County where he held various positions, including Chief of the Domestic Violence Unit, Chief of the Economic Crime Unit, Trial Team Member and Member of the Arson Unit.  While serving as an Assistant Prosecutor, William investigated and prosecuted a number of significant cases, including arson, fraud, and attempted murder.  During his tenure as an Assistant Prosecutor, William successfully tried numerous cases to verdict.  After leaving the Prosecutor’s Office, William was a shareholder with Capehart and Scatchard, LLC in Mount Laurel, New Jersey where he successfully represented public entities across Burlington County, including a bridge commission and county college.  Most recently, William was a shareholder with Malamut and Associates in Cherry Hill, New Jersey where he continued and expanded his representation of public entities and school districts.

William received his undergraduate degree in political science from Gettysburg College and his law degree from the University of Richmond. William is an active member of the community serving as an EMT with the Lavallette Volunteer First Aid Squad, a Director with the West Point Island Civic Association, and President of the Lavallette Regular Republican Club.  William is also an advocate for pediatric cancer awareness and research, a member of the Coalition Against Childhood Cancer (CAC2), and one of the founders of the #SaveJosh campaign.

Crisis Management:

Crisis management is the process by which an individual, non-profit entity, or business deals with an unanticipated event that threatens to disrupt the life of the individual or organization.  Crisis management is an event-based management approach that includes strategic thinking, clear communications, delineation of roles, responsibilities and processes and incorporates centralized control and decentralized execution. Typical crisis management responses include crisis identification, communication, mitigation and recovery.  The goal of crisis management is to be well prepared to ensure a rapid and consistent response to any crisis.  A crisis response mindset requires the ability to think broadly in terms of worst-case scenarios while simultaneously suggesting and implementing numerous specific solutions.

Carluccio, Leone, Dimon, Doyle and Sacks, LLC stands ready to assist individuals and organizations in managing the unmanageable.  Crisis management services include crisis preparedness assessment, crisis planning, development and implementation of crisis response strategies, inter- and intra-organizational crisis communication, and the development of recovery processes.
